Training

Our primary goal at The Shame Lab is to use research and theory about shame to transform organizations and better the lives of the people within them. Our training provides engaging, sensitive, and practical resources to advance shame competence in individuals, teams, and organizations.
We currently offer live in-person and online training with asynchronous training offerings coming soon.

Our Training Catalog

We currently offer live in-person or online training programs in shame competent professional practice. While most of our training to-date has been delivered in healthcare, health professions education, policing, and social services, our workshops are designed for implementation across professional practice organizations, including business, education, law, engineering, etc.

Our trainings are organized into two basic categories: Core & Translational workshops.

Core Workshops

Core workshops offer training ranging from high level overviews of shame competence to skills that can be deeply integrated within daily operations, institutional structures, and organizational culture.

Core workshops
provide varying levels of immersive skills building in the pillars that comprise shame competence: 1) acknowledging shame, 2) recognizing shame, 3) avoiding shame, 4) responding to shame, and 5) transforming organizations. Core workshops can be moderately tailored to fit a broad focus area (e.g., patient safety, education) through case studies, activities, and some content customization.

Customized Core Workshops

Translational Workshops

Translational workshops apply and contextualize foundational knowledge in specific professional domains, allowing participants to explore how shame competence translates into action. Through case studies, reflection, group discussion, and practice, these highly dynamic sessions bring theory to life within everyday professional practice.

Translational workshops
can be delivered in “one-off” fashion (w/ core framing about shame competence provided in an extra 30 min.*) or can be paired with Introduction/Foundational Shame Competence core workshops.

Because we frequently develop workshops based on what organizations need, our list of translational workshops is always growing.

Interested in multiple workshops?

Great! Pairing workshops together is a great way to delve deeply into specific applications of shame competence, and delivering multiple workshops to multiple groups over time is a great way to broadly instill shame competence in your organization.

We offer discounted pricing for training packages that combine multiple workshops, and we're happy to help advise you on which workshops might synchronize best with one another to achieve your organization's needs. Schedule a discovery call with us to explore more.

What makes our training unique?

The emotion of shame is a novel lens through which to understand and engage with challenges that define modern-day professional practice: high-stakes decisions; high performance expectations; the inevitability of failure and struggle; burnout, imposter syndrome, and other forms of distress; and the need to support team members' (and often clients') emotional, psychological, & social well-being. Amplifying these challenges is the rapidly shifting landscape ushered in by the A.I. era.
